Justice for all…

Gripping drama, action-packed film, chilling horror or ‘feel-good’, seasonal perennial, I wonder what caught your eye over the Christmas and New Year period?

I confess that I haven’t yet watched Mr Bates vs The Post Office but I will put this right in due course; the dramatisation highlights the struggle faced by hundreds of sub-postmasters, who were wrongly accused of theft and fraud as a result of failings in Horizon, the Post Office IT system. Honest, hardworking individuals were prosecuted and penalised, some only lost their reputation, source of income and their businesses. Others lost their homes, freedom or sadly, even their lives.

These events are not new, it’s almost five years since the Bates v Post Office Ltd concluded that there had been a miscarriage of justice – and serious questions were being asked long before that. The furore of recent days, the clamour for justice that will see the remaining cases cleared and compensation expedited is entirely appropriate. But it troubles me that it took an ITV drama to bring the incompetent and immoral practices into such focus that, suddenly, we have statements in Parliament, petitions for honours to be withdrawn etc.

I’m thrilled for those who may now finally receive justice after years where there was very little noticeable progress. But it bothers me that it appears you need your story to be made into a TV drama to get the profile needed to stimulate effective action. What about the multitude of other issues which are never going to get that kind of attention but can be just as devastating for those affected?

We have just celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ. Throughout his life and ministry, Jesus set us an example, challenging the norms and stereotypes of his day. He championed the oppressed, dined with the marginalised and cared for the suffering. Whatever our life or faith experience, the world would be a better place if we take the time to consider the needs of others, whether that be a word of sincere encouragement, real practical support or championing issues – being prepared to speak truth to power.
