Annual Report for Petersfield Fairtrade Group 2018

The Petersfield Fairtrade Group was established over 10 years ago with the aim of promoting and raising awareness of Fairtrade across Petersfield throughout schools, churches, businesses, shops and the town council.  Petersfield achieved Fairtrade town status in 2008 and our role as a group now is to maintain that status by continuing to promote and raise awareness of Fairtrade across Petersfield.

In 2018 we did this by organising a Fairtrade Bake off competition during Fairtrade fortnight in March.  Entrants from across schools, churches and the community were invited to bring along their cakes that had to include at least 2 Fairtrade ingredients.  A range of tasty and well-presented entries were received in all age groups including chocolate cakes, banana loaves, brownies, tiffin and sponges. Our two judges from the WI assessed and tasted the bakes providing feedback on each entry. After careful deliberation they named a winning bake and a highly commended one for each of our age group categories of infant, junior, secondary and adult, as well as winners for 'Best Presentation', 'Most Imaginative Bake' and 'Use of Fairtrade Ingredients’. Contestants and their friends and families were invited to view all the cakes and for the presentation of prizes and certificates by Town Mayor, Jamie Matthews. The prizes had been generously donated by a number of local shops and supermarkets that stock Fairtrade products.

For 2019 we are celebrating our 10 year anniversary as a Fairtrade town by joining with Artshop to organise the Fairtrade Artshop. This will be an art trail around Petersfield and surrounding villages.  We have invited schools, clubs and community groups to get creative and put together a piece of artwork that can be displayed in shop windows, churches and public spaces on the theme of Fairtrade.  We have linked up over 20 groups with spaces across town and are looking forward to seeing their work during Fairtrade fortnight 25th Feb – 10th March 2019.
