Remembrance Service in the Square, Sunday 14 November 2010

Despite the rain, The Square was packed by 10:25 when the Service began. Lined up in the square were members of the armed forces and locals voluntary groups with music provided by The Salvation Army band with other local musicians.

The service was led by the Rev'd Dominic Clarke of St Peters with the order of service being published in The Petersfield Post.

After the service everyone moved down to the war memorial at the top of the High Street where the two minutes silence was observed at 11 o'clock. After this wreaths were laid, the names of those from the Petersfield area who had fallen in war were read out and the service concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

Several PACT churches cancelled or re-scheduled their normal Sunday services so that as many Christians as possible might join in the Remembrance Service.

A moving event made more poignant by the attendance of so many - of all ages - in such difficult weather.

Wednesday 17 November 2010: Mike Jones (Poppy Appeal Organiser) said today that Churchers College are going to supply the PA system for next year’s Remembrance Service in the town.

Photographs taken during the morning:

Musicians were under cover but most people were
exposed to the almost continuous rain

Umbrellas were the order of the day but
the soldiers stood stolidly in the rain
