Minutes of the Co-ordinating Committee Meeting held in
The Salvation Army Hall, on Wednesday, 11 June at 7:30 pm

Purpose of Meeting: A forum for ‘communion’ and communication between PACT churches, PACT organisations and local Christians, to facilitate events aimed at increasing opportunities for joint worship, witness and work between PACT churches.

Present: John Callaghan (Chair), Paula Hudson (acting Secretary), Hilary Bonney, Rosemary Davies, Brian Edwards, Peter Hollins, John Studd, Christine Tully, Helen Mason, Vanessa Dowse, Carolyn Barton, Linda Read.

1. Introduction: John welcomed members to the meeting and opened the meeting with prayer, and a getting-to-know you better item.

2. Apologies for absence: Received from Judith Bee, Richard Saunders, Lindy Young, Emma Dean, Tom James, Andrew Hall.

3. Minutes for last meeting (2nd April 2014): Agreed.

4. Matters Arising: Suggestion for a Forgiveness Day (introduced by Patsy Robinson last meeting). Carolyn Barton requested further clarification after speaking to URC. Agreed to add to agenda.

5. Report on events since last meeting:

Good Friday Service: The talk by Rev Richard Saunders, the hospitality laid on by St Peter’s church, the form of the service, and the prayers said by the four youngsters were commended by different members. The need to provide help with the refreshments (ie some-one from each church) had been mentioned last meeting but the suggestion that those not on the Walk of Witness should assist in the church did not seem to have got through. The Chairman said that once they were aware of the problem they had stepped in to help, but it would be good to cover this better next year.

Walk of Witness: Alternative route suggested to take in the residential areas – Charles Street, Swan Street & Bakery Lane, since current route passed charity & other shops which closed on Good Friday. The march is our only time in public together and needs to be seen. Though it gave a prayerful witness to Jesus’ suffering it would be good to have an opportunity to show Christians being cheerful.

Spring Festival: The Chairman said Rev Will Hughes did a great job.

Summer Festival: 24th August 2014. PACT has been offered 11.30 – 11.50am slot for service. As there will be no amplification apart from microphones, the Chairman said he would hope to arrange songs, readings & mime to be performed as part of service, which he will co-ordinate. However, as this was his Ruby Wedding Anniversary, he might not be there on the day.

6. Treasurer’s Report: Chris Tully said there was nothing of note to report. Letter requested in her email of 6.6.14 re. tax exempt interest at Natwest Bank was produced & signed by Chair and Treasurer.

7. Request to Add Events & Campaigns to PACT website: John Studd (web master for the PACT web site) asked for copies of Friday Focus (Petersfield Herald) and Faith Comment (Petersfield Post) articles be emailed to him for the PACT website – otherwise he has to buy the paper and type the article in. Unfortunately three dates for articles in the paper had been missed and these were missed opportunities to talk about our faith. He suggested that each church ask their contributors to provide the papers with spare articles (which need to be non-date specific so they can be used by the paper any time an article is missing.) He would like email copies of these spare articles & to know when have been submitted. he Secretary pointed out that there had been a change to the email address for the Petersfield Post articles – it was now:

graememoir@petersfieldpost.co.uk - they have dropped the . between Graeme and Moir. Contributors are being reminded of the change with the emails sent as due dates arise.

8. Chairman’s Items:

Holiday Club. (28th July to 1st August 2014.) Helen Mason & Emma Dean have been organising Holiday Club for the last few years but are stepping down after this year due to other commitments. It was felt that it would be good to have some-one working alongside them this year with a view to running the event in 2015. Peter Hollins said he had some-one in mind. Others suggested we could advertise for successors. Helen & Emma happy to support with ideas – Emma plans the craft activities. Helen commended. the event which makes relationships with the community. The event mainly caters for ages up to 8 as older children are being offered lots of other activities in the same week.

Christian Aid week. Members reviewed their experiences collecting for Christian Aid. Only 2 churches now take up a Church Collection. The collectors felt the personal contacts they had with people in the town were valuable – this may be the only Christian contact people had.

PACT Christmas Card. The Chairman said he was organising. Some members would prefer a more classic piece of art from a senior school pupil, while others liked the contributions from younger artists. The theme of the picture continues overtly Christian.

Church Healing Day. A venue was unavailable for the date proposed last meeting - Saturday 15th November 2014. Further clarification was sought as to the aims of the proposed event, and how prayer proposed differed from the Unity Service (18th Jan 2015.) The Chairman & Helen Mason said they would contact Patsy Robinson & email round.

Sing Gospel. The Chairman is still pursuing this idea but has not been able to get the choir master he wanted.
King’s Arms. John Callaghan said the proposed development in the Avenue had been refused planning permission by the relevant Council sub-group and requested prayers. The development may have run foul of the over-arching plan for Petersfield. Unfortunately these seem only concerned with housing, not community buildings. The King’s Arms could stay in its present venue for another 2 – 2.5 years. The football club was suggested as an alternative site but felt to be in the wrong location. They have also considered Agincourt Building. They can raise sufficient funds and pay off any loans through rent saved.

10. Any other business: Father Peter Hollins asked whether any-one had contacts to help a deaf man in his mid 40s – most groups in the area being for the elderly. It was suggested that Patsy Robinson might know.

The Chairman had been to an event about Christian response to the environment and would like to pursue this locally.
