Christmas Day Lunch 2010

Report and Photographs from the Lunch

Sixty-two Christmas lunches were organised for residents who would otherwise have eaten alone on Christmas Day.

For the tenth year in succession volunteers organised the lunch at the United Reformed Church family centre in College Street, with 54 guests at the tables - eight other lunches were delivered to residents' homes for people who were unable to reach the venue.

The diners were treated to roast turkey with all the trimmings, including "pigs in blankets", brussels sprouts, parsnips, potatoes and gravy with bread sauce.

Organiser Henry Marshal said: "There was a jovial and convivial atmosphere. The only time it got a bit quieter was when everybody was eating.

"We did very similar numbers to last year. Transport was provided by a team of volunteers for people who needed it and no one was put off by the icy state of the roads or pavements."

Henry said that the event was for both volunteers and guests who would otherwise spend Christmas Day on their own.

"It is done by single people for single people," he said, "We all sit down together and it is a team effort. The kitchen team of four did a wonderful job, and meals were sent out to those who were unable, because of age or infirmity, to join the party in the Hall."

From Henry Marshall

On behalf of the group that organises the Christmas Day Lunch may I use the PACT web site to thank those who helped us with it.  Special thanks are due to the kitchen team who did a wonderful job, and to the drivers who did the fetching and carrying.  Thank you also to the people who made gifts of food and were once again were whole hearted in their support.  Special thanks are due to Waitrose, Tesco, Marks and Spencer, The Co-Op, Rowswells, and Morgans the butchers who gave their generous support in spite of the current financial difficulties for businesses.  The day was a great success, and everyone enjoyed a good Christmas dinner and a happy time in good company

Charles Farr took the photographs below and reports: "The meal was a success - good turn out though there was space for more, lots of helpers and enough left over for us to party on for a week!  Henry Marshall did a good job coordinating an excellent and experienced group of volunteers."

If you can supply a caption for any of the photographs below please email with the photograph number and comment. If you have your own comments on the day then please email these too and we'll add them to this page.
