Always look on the bright side…

When I moved to Petersfield during the summer, lockdown easing was relatively new. People had begun to emerge tentatively from the period of isolation, to regain some elements of life prior to Covid but there was wariness about a virus that was still in circulation. It was a very strange time to relocate and find my feet and I will probably feel newly arrived for much longer as a result.

During this time, it has been great to be able to get away from emails, risk assessments and the demands of the current situation by enjoying the surrounding countryside. It has been lovely to walk around the Heath and explore slightly further afield. The coast wasn’t easily accessible from West Yorkshire so I’ve enjoyed some lovely walks and the occasional swim while the weather has been good.

It may sound as if I am focused on a healthy lifestyle, certainly I’m conscious of the need to monitor things. The reality, in my case, is that the walking, apart from allowing me to see and appreciate things in a way that you can’t when speeding past in the car, usually justifies me buying cake with my drink. I walk the calories off – and then I pile them on again!

As the nights draw in and the days become colder, we can all struggle with motivation. Autumn is a beautiful time of the year; the colours can be amazing but sometimes we focus only on the cold and the dark. I need to push myself, even when the weather might put me off, to put on my walking shoes, take my camera and appreciate what is around me.

With our TV screens dominated by news of further Covid cases and measures to control the virus, we all need the ability to look for things to be thankful for. Not that we ignore the difficulties and challenges that we face but that we maintain a balance by recognising the good things that are around us.

Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesian Chapter 5 verses 19 and 20.
