Let’s do what we can, with what we’ve got, where we are...

I belong to a men’s group in Petersfield. We meet monthly and have food, chat and a speaker. One of the regulars tells the story of when he was on a naval ship and reports of an earthquake were received. Although they realised one small ship was not equipped to solve all the problems of this natural disaster they nevertheless changed course towards where people were suffering. As the enormity of the relief effort became known the crew were unnerved by the scale of the need. Their captain however, calmly said to everyone ‘we will do what we can, with what we have, where we are called to.’

Petersfield and the surrounding area have many people answering that call. There are different groups of people who come together and do what they can, with what they have, to meet the needs around them. We must never be defeated by the scale of the task or by the lack of resources but have faith to believe that, when we here that call on our lives, we can make a difference and resources and connections will come. I remember 20 years ago a friend took me to see a very run down building and he said ‘I can see an amazing youth project based here’. I looked at the mess, the expense and the hours of labour involved and doubted for several weeks until I chose to look with his eyes of faith. Suddenly all things were possible and that was the beginning of the wonderful King’s Arms project! So many professionals, District Councillors, Town Councillors, Mayors and local friends sat on old boxes surrounded by mess said it’s impossible, BUT I can see you believe it is possible and because of your vision and faith I am going to support this project. The King’s Arms Petersfield is now so successful that people in Alton have asked us to help them to open a similar project in their town. The council have provided a building and Alton folk are volunteering to upgrade this shell of a building into a state-of-the-art youth centre. Here in Petersfield we are hoping to purchase a permanent new home for the youth of this area.

So my point is that faith is concrete and passionate and all that is needed are dreamers to dream dreams of what could be. Children pray to change the world, long for world peace, feed the hungry and we as adults can join with them to do what we can, with what we have, where we are. Please contact me if I can support you with your dreams.
