1 January 2020: Rev’d Joshua Thomas – Petersfield and Liss United Reformed Church

A new Decade, a new start!

Often when a new year comes around, we stand back and take stock of all that has happened in the previous year. Sometimes, we have the opportunity to reflect on the decade that has been and that’s where we find ourselves as 2020 draws in. Ten years is a long time and so much can change. Personally, I have lived in four different towns, 7 different houses, I met my wife, got married and had two children, all a bit of a whirlwind!

Harold Wilson once uttered the infamous words, ‘a week is a long time in politics’, well this is very true and when we look back at some of the weeks, we have had lately in UK politics, we can see very clearly what he meant. Ten years is an even longer time in politics… Back at the start of 2010, a labour government led by Gordon Brown was in power, however, this all changed in May 2010 when a certain David Cameron moved in to number 10 Downing Street. What a lot has changed since then…

It is fair to say that the political landscape has caused much division within our society over the last couple of years. Whatever our views, it seems to me to be a good time to start afresh, to leave some of that division behind us. It has been observed by many, that kindness is something that is lacking in our world at the moment. Small acts of kindness can go a long way. Over Christmas we saw just how much people were touched by small acts of kindness and generosity, it really brings communities together. So, as we start 2020 – a new decade, I encourage us all to resolve to be more kind, look for the opportunities to help out others and we can begin to change the world.

I wish you a very happy and healthy new year.

Messy Church will be holding a Christingale Service on Sunday 12 January at the Methodist Church from 3:00 pm to 5:00 - including a "high" tea afterwards (sandwiches and cakes!).
