Our Hidden Ministries

I’ve just returned from visiting my Daughter who lives in Spain and works as a Licensed Lay Minister, assisting the part-time Vicar. Their ‘patch’ covers around 90 square miles and has 5 churches spread widely around the area; the furthest takes 1.5 hours to reach by car. Each congregation is fairly close knit and rarely meets up with other Ex-patriots/visitors.

During my short stay, I had the pleasure of assisting in the preparations, cooking and serving a delicious 3 course dinner to those members of the 5 congregations who met at the Annual Summer Lunch, held in the Vicar’s garden.

In the kitchen I felt instantly at home and became involved with various discussions: confidences were shared, sadnesses discussed and recipes exchanged! Whilst serving the Diners, I overheard several snippets of conversations verging from which camera to buy to quilting and saw understanding nods and hugs given to the recently bereaved and those who missed their Families.

Every single person was ministering to another, seemingly without realising the importance of their presence to each other. This made me wonder if we truly value our own gifts of ministering in which ever situation we find ourselves? Jesus ministered to His Disciples and they in turn were sent out to minister to others. We too are Jesus’ Disciples – the gift of ministering to others is in us all – we tend to underestimate our presence of just being there in community. It is important that we realise our own worth and those around us who minister to us too.

What an important lesson I learned – I hope that you too will realise the hidden gift of ministering within your own self – just by being you.

The IMC (In Ministry to Children) Fun Day will take place in Ram's Walk on Saturday 6 July - come along to see what IMC are doing in Columbia and support their work.
