4 June 2019: Tom Cooper, Reader, St Mary’s Church, Buriton

'Thy Kingdom Come' initiative

In common with churches throughout the diocese of Portsmouth and the Christian community worldwide, in Buriton we are taking part in a period of prayer on the theme of ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. This invitation, first made in 2016 by Archbishops Justin and John to the Church of England but now an international and ecumenical call to prayer, lasts from Ascension Day (which this year falls on 30 May) to Pentecost Sunday (9 June). During this period Christians of all denominations commit to pray with and for God’s world-wide family – as a church, as individuals, or in our own families. In Petersfield all of the churches are combining to create a pop-up prayer room in the town for these 10 days.

During this period each of the churches is taking on the role in turn of welcoming people to the prayer room and helping them to feel at home. St Mary’s Buriton will be hosting the event on 8 June. During the 10 days there will be prayer stations offering different styles of worship through prayer, there will be opportunities to pray with others, and also praying for those who ask for prayer. The Archbishops’ hope is that ‘people will be empowered by prayer through the Holy Spirit and find new confidence to be witnesses for Christ’. Come along to experience the power of prayer. Prayer can take many forms: it can be whatever you want and in whatever way you are moved. God has promised to hear our prayers, whether we whisper, shout in joy or grief, or utter them in the silence of our hearts.

In Petersfield PACT (Petersfield Area Churches Together) have organised a Popup Prayer Space from Friday 31 May to Saturday 8 June in the old Thornton's At Home shop in the High Street - next to Boots. For full details see: - everyone is welcome.
